In fact, to call it a book is also a bit of an overstatement: it’s really a small collections of essays. I wrote them while sitting by Lake Zurich during a holiday before I started working again.
I had decided that my first book – I had dreamed of writing a book – should to try to describe in words what I had learned about making an abrupt career change to try to fit who I am to what I did every day. I focused on those aspects of the change from which I had learned the most and took guidance from the Learning and Organizational Change program I had just completed.
It took me two years to have the courage to put my personal essays into book form and publish them because I found I could not both be authentic and hide myself behind the topic as an author. It would lose its purpose.
After I finally distributed the first copies in 2005, I began to receive personal, hand-written notes and letters from readers. Very unexpectedly.
They said things like “I reflected on my own decisions as I read the book and reframed some of my conclusions.” “Your small book had a surprisingly big effect on me!” “It helped me realize I am not alone in my struggles.” “It made me think again about my life to see if I was being true to my own value set and to my priorities.”
I began to feel glad about having taken the risk to put my voice out there in support of a topic that a lot of us seem to experience, but few of us feel comfortable discussing.
From that interaction, the jallé Six for Yourself was born. I will always be grateful for this opportunity.
I published Rearchitecting myself. If you participate in Six for Yourself, I will happily give you one. You can also purchase the book directly for Euros 18.00 inclusive shipping and VAT or any other applicable taxes.
